When baseball fans discuss the true origins of the game the Atlanta Braves must be included in the conversation. The franchise is one of the two charter members of the National League. The other is the Chicago Cubs and is considered by some to be “the oldest continuously playing team in American professional sports.” The Braves were originally named the Boston Red Stockings in 1871 and went through seven different name changes while based in Boston. The team moved to Milwaukee in 1953 and then Atlanta in 1966.
The Braves experienced considerable success early and won four straight National Association of Professional Base Ball pennants from 1872-1875, then eight more National League pennants before the twentieth century began. During the storied career of the franchise, the team won ten National League pennants while in Boston, two NL pennants in Milwaukee and five since moving to Atlanta. The Braves then captured three World Series titles, in 1914, 1957 and 1995.
The five National League pennants the Atlanta Braves have won through the 2011 season are particularly impressive since all five came in the 1990s. The team went on an incredible run that began in 1991, winning three National League West division titles, eleven NL East titles, five NL pennants and the 1995 World Series championship. The 1994 season was cut short due to a strike by the players. The elimination of the post-season in 1994 means the Atlanta Braves captured fourteen straight National League division titles, either as a member of the NL West or East.
The 1991 season was particularly special. The team finished in last place the season before. The Atlanta Braves had climbed from the cellar to win the division and then went on to the World Series the very next season. The Braves lost that 1991 “Fall Classic” to the Minnesota Twins in seven games, a World Series many baseball historians consider to be one of the greatest of all-time.
