There are some baseball franchises that even the greenest fans will know something about. The Boston Red Sox team definitely comes to mind as one of those teams. The franchise was one of the original eight charter teams of the American League, coming into the AL in 1901 as the Boston Americans. The team kept that name through the 1907 season before changing its name to the Red Sox in 1908.

The Boston Red Sox are a team that has a solid foundation and heavy tradition. The team was quite successful as the Americans and during the early years as the Red Sox, winning six American League pennants by 1918 in 1903, 1904, 1912, 1915, 1916 and 1918. The franchise also won the World Series in 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916 and 1918. It is interesting to remember just how successful this franchise was through the 1918 season, because it would not be until 2004 before the Red Sox would win another World Series.

During the early years one of the top players on the Red Sox was a pitcher named Babe Ruth. On December 26, 1919, the Boston Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to their AL rival, the New York Yankees. The sale shook the baseball world and set the Yankees on a winning course that it would enjoy for decades. The Boston Red Sox didn’t fare nearly as well, and many people attributed it to “The Curse of the Bambino”, the baseball gods’ way of getting back at the Red Sox for making such a foolish move.

The Red Sox would not win another American League pennant until 1946 and lost in the World Series that year. Subsequent AL pennants in 1967, 1975 and 1986 resulted in the same losing effort in the World Series, generally with some bit of tragedy thrown in the mix such as the infamous Bill Buckner error at first base in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series against the New York Mets. That particular Game 6 ended in improbable fashion since the Mets were down 5 to 3 in the bottom of the tenth inning and down to their last strike.

Boston Red Sox fans have never wavered in their support of the team, and always entered each new season with a sense of optimism that “this will be the year.” When the Red Sox fell behind 0 games to 3 to division foe and arch rival New York Yankees in the 2004 American League Championship Series things seemed bleak once again. This time the impossible happened as the Boston Red Sox were down 4 to 3 in the bottom of the ninth inning in game Four, and baseball’s all-time postseason closer Mariano Rivera was on the mound.

Yet the Red Sox found a way to send the game into extra innings before a two-run home run by David Ortiz in the 12th inning sent the ALCS to a Game Five. No team in baseball history had ever come back from an 0 – 3 deficit, but the Boston Red Sox completed the impossible dream, beating the Yankees to advance to the World Series, then swept the St. Louis Cardinals for the franchise’s first World Series championship since 1918.
