One of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the Chicago White Sox began playing baseball back in 1900 as the Chicago White Stockings. The team eventually changed its name to the White Sox and played its home games at South Side Park. The White Sox later moved into historic Comiskey Park and spent more than eighty years at the stadium.

The White Sox experienced plenty of success early on. By 1917 the franchise had already captured three American League pennants and two World Series titles. Led by outstanding players such as Shoeless Joe Jackson, Eddie Cicotte and Eddie Collins the franchise captured its second “Fall Classic” in 1917 and headed into the 1919 World Series poised to win another title.

Unfortunately that team became famous for all the wrong reasons. Several key members of the team, including Eddie Cicotte and Joe Jackson, were accused of conspiring with gamblers to throw World Series games. The players were banned from baseball for life and the 1919 White Sox became forever known as the Black Sox.

Eighty-eight years would pass before former White Sox shortstop Ozzie Guillien would lead the ballclub back to the World Series and finally capture its third World Series title. Through the 2011 season the Chicago White Sox have won the World Series three times, the American League pennant and six times, the AL Central division three times and the AL West division twice. The Chicago team from the South Side have given fans plenty of reasons over the years to cheer and pack the team’s new stadium that opened in 1991, U.S. Cellular Field.
