The Cincinnati Reds became a member of the National League after originating in the American Association in 1882. Over a century of quality play in a city that truly cares about its team has led the Reds to becoming one of baseball’s most historic franchises.
When Major League Baseball only had two divisions in each league the Reds competed in the NL West. The team was in that division from 1969-1993 and established some fierce rivalries with the Dodgers and Braves during those seasons for NL West supremacy. The Reds were kings of the NL West seven times while playing in that division, six of those titles coming in the seventies during the magnificent run of “The Big Red Machine.” The Reds teams of the seventies also captured the National League pennant four times and won the World Series on two occasions. Through the 2011 season the Cincinnati Reds have won five World Series championships and nine National League pennants. When the team won its last World Series title in 1990 the Reds became the first and only National League team to go wire-to-wire, never falling out of first place for the entire year and sweeping the Oakland Athletics in the “Fall Classic.” That sweep ran the consecutive wins streak for the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series to nine straight games dating back to Game 7 of the 1975 World Series against the Boston Red Sox.
The Cincinnati Reds play their regular season ballgames at Great American Ballpark, the team’s seventh home during its career. The ballclub has been at the latest venue since 2003 and fans flock to the park every game to support their beloved Reds.
