Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds have been a part of Major League Baseball for over a century. The franchise was originally a charter member of the American Association in 1882 before joining the MLB eight years later. The original name of the team was the Cincinnati Red Stockings from 1882-1889 before changing its name to the Reds in 1890. There was a brief period of time when the team was known as the Redlegs from 1953-1958, but the Reds name returned in 1958.
The Reds became a member of the National League upon entering Major League Baseball and have been a member of the “Senior Circuit” ever since. The Reds have a rich tradition of winning during their history, capturing seven National League West division titles, two NL Central titles, nine NL pennants and five World Series titles. The “Big Red Machine” years of the seventies featured what many baseball historians feel were some of MLB’s all-time great teams with the Reds winning consecutive World Series titles in 1975-1976. The Hall of Fame has plenty of Cincinnati Reds representatives from those years, including Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez. One of the Reds all-time great players was Pete Rose, baseball’s all-time hits king with 4256 hits in his career. Rose is not a member of the Hall of Fame due to being permanently banned from baseball in 1989.
