One of the first eight teams of the original American League, the Cleveland Indians joined Major League Baseball in 1901 as the Cleveland Bluebirds. A year later the team was renamed the Bronchos, then experienced another name change to the Naps that lasted from 1903-1914. The franchise finally settled on the Cleveland Indians in 1915.

The Indians experienced success early in their history, capturing an American League pennant and a World Series title in 1920. However, the team sunk into mediocrity in the 1930s until the arrival of a young 17-year-old pitcher by the name of Bob Feller. Feller had a blazing fastball and set a record in his rookie season that stood for years, seventeen strikeouts in a single ballgame. He would lead the league in strikeouts from 1938-1941 and helped set a foundation for the ballclub that would translate into success years later. The franchise captured its second and last World Series title to date in 1948.

Years of mediocre baseball followed with the occasional bright spot, including a perfect game by Len Barker in 1981. When former Cleveland Indians first baseman, Mike “The Human Rain Delay” Hargrove took over as manager in 1991 things began to dramatically change for the franchise in a positive way.

The Cleveland Indians captured five straight American League Central Division titles from 1995-1999 and two AL pennants, 1995 and 1997. The 1997 World Series may have been one of the most disheartening moments for the Cleveland Indians and their fans. After defeating the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series and the Baltimore Orioles in the American League Championship Series, the Cleveland Indians faced the Florida Marlins in the 1997 World Series.

The series went to a deciding Game Seven and the Indians entered the bottom of the ninth inning leading 2-1. Closer Jose Mesa allowed the Marlins to tie the game that inning and the Florida Marlins won the game and the World Series in the eleventh inning. The Indians became the first team in history to lose the World Series after entering the bottom of the ninth inning of the final game with the lead.
