The state of Colorado and the city of Denver had been campaigning for a Major League Baseball franchise for a number of years before finally being awarded a franchise in 1991. Back in 1985 the Pittsburgh Pirates were considering a move to Denver but the deal fell through. Major League Baseball granted Colorado the rights to a franchise six years later. This allowed Denver to build an expansion team that would be Colorado’s own team from the very beginning.
Mile High Stadium in Denver was the home of the Colorado Rockies for the team’s first two seasons.
