Detroit Tigers
The Detroit Tigers have been a part of professional baseball since 1894, initially joining as a member of the Western League, a minor league baseball league. The Western league was renamed the American League in 1900, making the franchise one of the eight charter members of the American League.
Five years later the Detroit Tigers acquired outfielder Ty Cobb, considered by many baseball historians to be the greatest Major League Baseball player of all-time. Cobb was a fearless player who possessed a fiery temper. He was well-known for sharpening the spikes on his cleats and sliding into bases with his cleats up in the air, daring any fielder to tag him. His demeanor did not overshadow his incredible play on the field as he is one of baseball’s all-time hits leaders with 4191, second only to Pete Rose, and still holds the highest career batting average at .367 and batting titles with eleven.
The addition of Ty Cobb made the Detroit Tigers a legitimate contender in the American League, winning three straight AL pennants from 1907-1909 but losing all three seasons in the World Series. The first two losses in the “Fall Classic” are particularly significant since both were to the Chicago Cubs, the last two times the Cubs appeared in the World Series.
The Detroit Tigers would eventually break through, winning seven more American League pennants through the 2011 season and four World Series titles in 1935, 1945, 1968 and 1984. The Detroit Tigers have also captured three AL East titles and one AL Central title during its history and advanced as the American League wild card team to the playoffs in 2006. Fan support has been positive throughout the history of the franchise and Tigers tickets have always been a hot commodity.
