Texas residents were ecstatic when the city of Houston was awarded a Major League Baseball franchise. The Houston Colt .45s played their home ballgames at Colt Stadium from 1962 until1964. Although the Colt .45s never made a big impact in the league the careers of Hall of Famer Joe Morgan and one of baseball’s all-time great pinch hitters Rusty Staub both started in Houston.

The fourth season of the franchise was not only big for the organization but important for Major League Baseball. The team changed its name to the Astros and moved into the world’s first domed stadium. The venue was named the Astrodome in honor of the city being the home of the United States space program. The Astrodome was nicknamed “The Eighth Wonder of the World” and baseball fans flocked to the stadium from all over the country.

The fact that grass would not grow in the Astrodome inspired another first in Major League Baseball, the use of artificial grass called Astroturf. Astroturf was used in other stadiums for multiple sports but the use of this synthetic surface has declined in recent years due because Astroturf is tough on the knees and other joints of ballplayers, plus it can cause extreme burns if a player slides on the surface. Nevertheless, the Houston Astros will always be credited with introducing it to the game.

The Houston Astros have enjoyed periods of success in its history, winning two National League West, and four NL Central division titles. Plus, the Astros qualified for the playoffs twice as the National League wild card representative. The Houston Astros did win the National League pennant in 2005, but they were swept in the World serious by the Chicago White Sox. The Astros remain the oldest baseball franchise to have never won a World Series while remaining in the same city for its entire history.
