Kansas City Royals
The city of Kansas City previously fielded a Major League Baseball team, the Kansas City Athletics from 1955-1967. When that franchise moved to Oakland the Missouri senator at that time, Stuart Symington worked diligently to help Kansas City land a new team. When baseball expansion occurred in 1969 Kansas City was awarded a new franchise.
The name “Royals” follows a tradition of team names from other sports such as the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs and the NBA’s Kansas City Kings. The logo for the Kansas City Royals is very similar to the logo from the Kansas City Monarchs, one of the teams from the Negro League. The Kansas City Royals also have the American Royal, a livestock show, horse show, and rodeo held annually in Kansas City since 1899 as a foundation for the team’s name.
The name “Royals” definitely fit during the early years of the franchise. The franchise was one of the first in Major League Baseball to create its own baseball academy and several future MLB stars would train in that system. The players from that academy plus future Hall of Famer George Brett would form the nucleus for a team that would dominate the game for nearly a decade starting in 1976. The franchise won three straight American League West division titles from 1976-1978 but each year lost to the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series. After missing the playoffs in 1979, the Kansas City Royals won another AL West title and once again had to face the Yankees in the ALCS. This time the Royals, led by AL MVP George Brett in a season when he flirted with the magic .400 mark for batting average, swept the Yankees in three games before losing to the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series in six.
The Kansas City Royals would make the playoffs three more times from 1981-1985, capturing two more AL West titles in 1984-1985 and the American League pennant in 1985. The 1985 season was a magical one for the Royals, defeating the cross-state St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 after falling behind 1-3 in the World Series for the franchise’s only World Series championship.
Times have been tough since then for the Kansas City Royals as the team has not been to the playoffs since winning the “Fall Classic”. However, fans still pour into Kauffman Stadium every season to support their Royals. Royals tickets can be purchased on this website with the proceeds going to support a charity organization by the name of the Charro Foundation.
