In 1992 Major League Baseball underwent an expansion as two National League teams were added to the roster. One of these teams was the Florida Marlins. Baseball had already been a key component of the state of Florida for years due to the ever-popular Grapefruit League. With the introduction of the Marlins, the great state of Florida laid claim to a team of its own when it began playing games in 1993.

Marlins owner Wayne Huizenga was also the owner of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, so it made sense that the Florida Marlins made its regular season home at the same venue where the Dolphins played. Sun Life Stadium would serve as the Marlins home base from 1993-2011. It is quite possible this particular stadium has experienced more name changes than any other venue in the United States, having been called Pro Player Park, Pro Player Stadium, Dolphin Stadium, Dolphins Stadium, and Land Shark Stadium over the years.

When the 2012 season opens the Marlins will find themselves playing its home games at the new Marlins Ballpark, set to be completed in March 2012. The move also prompted ownership to change the name of the team to the Miami Marlins. Fans can purchase Marlins tickets on this site and support a tremendous charity at the same time.

The Marlins have only advanced to the post-season on two occasions through the 2011 season, but capitalized on both occasions. The Florida Marlins were the National League’s wild card squad in 1997 and 2003. Both seasons the Marlins advanced all the way to the World Series, defeating the Cleveland Indians 4-3 in 1997 and the New York Yankees 4-2 in 2003. The Marlins were the first wild card team to be victorious in the “Fall Classic” in 1997.
