Major League Baseball awarded two cities National League expansion franchises in 1992 with the intent of both new teams competing in the upcoming season. The first city named was Denver, Colorado and the second was Miami, Florida. Team owner, Wayne Huizenga, opted to call his new team the Florida Marlins rather than the Miami Marlins. The Marlins were placed in the National League East.

The franchise played its home games at Sun Life Stadium from its inaugural season through the 2011 season. This venue also hosts the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, the NCAA’s Miami Hurricanes, and one of college football’s BCS bowl games, the Orange Bowl. Due in part to using a stadium that primarily caters to football and the initial fan reaction to having a new baseball team in town, the Florida Marlins set the franchise attendance record of 3,064,847 during their very first season. Thereafter attendance dropped quickly as the Florida Marlins did not immediately post a winning record.

The Florida Marlins reached the post-season for the first time in 1997. During this fifth season of existence, the team took their National League Wild Card berth all the way to a World Series title. The Marlins defeated the Cleveland Indians in a highly competitive seven-game series with Game Seven being decided in eleven innings. The Cleveland Indians became the first team in history to lose a World Series after entering the bottom of the ninth inning in Game Seven with the lead. By winning the “Fall Classic” in 1997 the Florida Marlins became the first wild card team ever to win the World Series. The franchise would repeat the exact same feat six years later when it defeated the New York Yankees in six games.

On November 11, 2011 the Florida Marlins officially changed its name to the Miami Marlins and are set to play its home games at a new stadium, Marlins Ballpark.
