The Milwaukee Brewers have been a member of the National League Central since 1998. The franchise originally was a member of the American League when joining Major League Baseball in 1969 as the Seattle Pilots. The Pilots only lasted one season in Seattle as financial problems plagued the franchise from Day One. In April 1970 a judge ruled in favor of moving the struggling franchise from Seattle to Milwaukee, under new ownership led by Bud Selig, MLB’s current commissioner. The transition occurred just in the nick of time prior to the start of the season.

This rather inauspicious beginning to the franchise would unfortunately become a standard for a number of years. The Milwaukee Brewers would not enjoy a winning season until 1978. The fans suffered through eight straight seasons of losing baseball until the ballclub posted a 93-69 record that season. The organization had acquired a number of key ballplayers that would prove to be instrumental in the team’s success for the next six seasons, including Hall of Famers Robin Yount, Paul Molitor and Rollie Fingers, as well as star ballplayers such as Gorman Thomas, Cecil Cooper, Ben Oglivie and 1982 Cy Young Award winner, Pete Vuckovich.

The Milwaukee Brewers qualified for the playoffs for the first time in franchise history in 1981. That season was divided into two halves due to the players’ strike. The Brewers captured the second half American League East title but lost to the New York Yankees in its initial playoff appearance. The franchise built on that success the very next season, capturing its first and only AL East title and AL pennant before losing to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games in the World Series. Through the 2011 season this has been the only World Series appearance for the franchise.

The franchise has been to the playoffs two more times since 1982 as the National League wild card team in 2008 and the NL Central division champion in 2011.
