The Milwaukee Brewers had quite an interesting beginning to its career as a member of Major League Baseball. The franchise was born in 1969 as the Seattle Pilots where they played for one season in Washington. Following that inaugural season the franchise was bought during bankruptcy by current MLB commissioner, Bud Selig, and moved to Milwaukee. Baseball, however, was not new to Milwaukee. Prior to the relocation, the city was home to the National League Braves from 1953-1965 before relocating to Atlanta. The Milwaukee Brewers became a member of the American League once the team moved to the city in 1970 and remained a member of the AL through 1997.

The fact this franchise survived after the move from Seattle to Milwaukee is astonishing. Bud Selig and then Pilots owner, Dewey Soriano, agreed to the sale during the 1969 World Series. Selig was a minority owner in the Milwaukee Braves organization so his intent had always been to move the franchise to Milwaukee. Despite the mutual agreement, the state of Washington filed an injunction to stop the sale. Soriano responded by filing bankruptcy wherein a judge ruled to allow the sale effective April 1, 1970. The late decision forced a number of terrible moves. Since there was no time to order new uniforms for the 1970 season the old Seattle Pilots uniforms were used with the new Brewers logo replacing the Pilots logo. Fans could still see the outline of the Pilots logo on the jersey. More important, even though Milwaukee had previously been a National League city the franchise was placed in the American League West even though geographically that made no sense. It was not until 1972 that the team moved to the AL East.

Through the 2011 season the franchise has won one American League East division title in 1982 and one National League Central division title in 2011. The 1982 squad won the AL pennant and lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series three games to four. Milwaukee has consistently supported the franchise since the move in 1970.
