After playing in Washington, D.C., from 1901-1960 as the Washington Senators, team owner, Calvin Griffith, moved his team to the largest metropolitan area in Minnesota called the Twin Cities. Upon the move to the Midwest the franchise became known as the Minnesota Twins. The name, adopted in recognition of the famous ‘Twin Cities,’ cleverly avoided any hard feelings between fans living in nearby St. Paul and those in stadium-based Minneapolis.

Since the franchise already had a talented group of ballplayers on board, the fans sensed success and welcomed the team with open arms. As the Senators, the franchise had three American League pennants and one World Series title. The Minnesota Twins captured an American League pennant in 1965 but lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games during the World Series. The ultimate championship title was again within sight when the team won the American League West division title in 1969 and repeated in 1970, but both years the team lost to the Baltimore Orioles in the American League Championship Series.

It would be seventeen years before the Minnesota Twins would advance to the playoffs again. The 1987 Twins won the American League West and then defeated the Detroit Tigers in the ALCS to advance to its first World Series in 22 years. This time the Twins would not be denied, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals. Four seasons later the Twins returned to a true “Fall Classic”, defeating the Atlanta Braves in an incredible seven game World Series epic battle. This series featured two franchises that in the previous season had finished last in its own division and then made it all the way to the World Series the next year.

Through the 2011 season the Minnesota Twins have won four American League West titles, six AL Central division crowns, six AL pennants and three World Series championships. The franchise went on an incredible run to start off the millennium, capturing all six of its Central division titles during the first decade.
