The Minnesota Twins may only have been a part of Major League Baseball since 1961 but the actual franchise dates all the way back to 1894 as the Kansas City Blues. The team was part of the Western League through 1900 before becoming one of the eight charter franchises of the American League in 1901. They then moved to Washington, D.C. where they were renamed the Washington Senators.

From 1911 through 1933, the Senators enjoyed considerable success. Hall of Fame ballplayers such as Joe Cronin and Walter “The Big Train” Johnson helped lead the team to consecutive American League pennants in 1924 and 1925 as well as a World Series Championship where the Senators defeated the New York Giants in seven games.

The Washington Senators remained a part of Major League Baseball through the 1960 season. During that same year, the league awarded the city of Minnesota an expansion franchise. In light of this decision, the current Senators’ owner, Calvin Griffith, requested that the league give him permission to move his franchise back to Minnesota; in turn Washington, D.C., would be given the expansion team. Major League Baseball promptly approved the deal and the Senators moved to Minnesota with a new name — The Twins.

Minnesota greeted their new team with open arms. The Twins already had a solid nucleus of quality ballplayers that included Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew and Jim Kaat. That squad won the American League pennant in 1965 but lost to a very talented Los Angeles Dodgers team led by Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax in seven games.

The franchise would endure years of mediocre performance before finally winning its fifth American League pennant in 1987. That team broke through and captured the franchise’s second World Series title over the St. Louis Cardinals. Four years later the Twins repeated the feat, this time against the Atlanta Braves in what many baseball historians consider to be one of the greatest “Fall Classics” in history.

Minnesota Twins fans anxiously await the start of the regular season each year in hopes that the franchise can add to its three World Series titles, six American League pennants and six AL Central division titles.
