The New York Mets entered the Major Leagues as one baseball’s first expansion teams in 1962. The franchise became a part of the National League. After playing for two seasons at the Polo Grounds the New York Mets moved into its new home in Queens, Shea Stadium. While the franchise made its home at that stadium from 1964-2008 the New York Mets captured five National League East titles, four NL pennants and two World Series titles in 1969 and 1986. Both “Fall Classic” championships were very significant in baseball history.

The 1969 “Miracle Mets” were 9 ½ games behind the Chicago Cubs in mid-August during that season. The team reeled off an incredible 39-11 record the last fifty games of the year to come all the way back from third place in the division and beat the Cubs by eight games, an unbelievable 17 ½ game swing. The franchise then went on to beat the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles four games to one.

The 1986 World Series victory may have been even more improbable. The team posted a 108-54 record during the regular season, one of the best in National League history. After eliminating the Houston Astros in the National League Championship series the team fell behind two games to four to the Boston Red Sox in the World Series. The Red Sox appeared poised to finally break “The Curse of the Bambino” when the Mets were down 3-5 in the bottom of the tenth inning and down to their last strike. The comeback the New York Mets staged at that point is one of the greatest in baseball history and ended with an incredibly bizarre play when Mookie Wilson’s ground ball went through the legs of first baseman Bill Buckner to bring home the game-winning run. The next day the New York Mets beat the Red Sox 8-5 to capture its second World Series title.
