Some baseball historians are very critical of the New York Yankees for being willing to spend a lot of money to build a talented team. The fact remains, however, that buying ballplayers does not automatically equal buying victories. The New York Yankees still have to work hard year round to consistently post wins. No other team in baseball history has been as successful as the New York Yankees.

The New York Yankees were one of the eight charter franchises of the American League. Once the franchise finally settled on the Yankees name in 1913 the team began to assert itself as the dominant power, not just in the American League but in baseball. The first significant era was the Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig era from 1923-1935. These two sluggers helped lead the New York Yankees to four World Series titles and five American League pennants while the two Hall of Famers played together. When Ruth left the franchise for the Boston Braves in 1934 a new era began.

Joe DiMaggio took center stage in New York starting in 1936 and would be a vital part of the Yankees franchise for thirteen seasons. Even a two-year stint in the military could not keep Joltin’ Joe and the rest of the New York Yankees from absolutely dominating the game. The franchise won ten American League pennants and nine World Series championships during the thirteen seasons in fifteen years with Joe DiMaggio.

The New York Yankees simply kept reloading instead of taking time to rebuild. The next era of great New York Yankees baseball began when Mickey Mantle played in his first MLB game in 1951. The Mantle and Marris era of 1960-1964 saw the New York Yankees win all five AL pennants during that time frame and two World Series titles.

The New York Yankees won two World Series championships in 1977-1978, then for the first time in the history of the franchise something odd happened. The team did not win another World Series for 18 years. This marked the beginning of the manager Joe Torre/shortstop Derek Jeter era that ran from 1996-2007. The Yankees won ten American League East titles, six American League pennants and four World Series titles. Dominance had officially returned to the Big Apple.
