New York Yankees
No other team in the history of Major League Baseball has won as many pennants, or most importantly, as many World Series titles as the New York Yankees. They were one of the eight original franchises of the American League, starting out as the Baltimore Orioles in 1901. Two years later the franchise moved to New York City and became the New York Highlanders. It was not until 1913 that the team changed its name to the New York Yankees.
While the franchise was still called the Highlanders the team played at Hilltop Park in downtown Manhattan. The team remained at that stadium until changing its name to the New York Yankees. Once that occurred the franchise moved once again, this time to the Polo Grounds. The Yankees would make the Polo Grounds its home from 1913-1922. The franchise experienced very little success during these eras, only winning its first two American League pennants in 1921-1922.
The fortunes of the franchise changed dramatically on December 26, 1919 when the Boston Red Sox sold pitcher turned outfielder Babe Ruth to the Yankees. Babe Ruth not only went on to become one of baseball’s all-time greatest players but the Red Sox would not win another World Series title for 86 years. This period in baseball history is often referred to as “The Curse of the Bambino” due to how well the New York Yankees played and how elusive playoff success was for the Red Sox.
In 1923, the New York Yankees moved into its new home, Yankee Stadium. This stadium was commonly referred to as “The House That Ruth Built” since his home runs were the big drawing power for the franchise. The New York Yankees would draw on the mystique of its new home and develop into MLB’s most productive franchise, winning 40 American League pennants and 27 World Series titles through the 2011 season. No other team is remotely close to matching those numbers.
Today the New York Yankees play in a new Yankee Stadium that opened in 2009 and continue to be perennial World Series contenders.
