Oakland Athletics
The Athletics were one of the eight charter franchises of the American League, beginning to play baseball in 1901 as the Philadelphia Athletics. The franchise experienced outstanding success in the early years, winning three of four World Series titles from 1910-1914 and two more in a row in 1929-1930. Unfortunately the franchise experienced a decline after the fifth title and moved to Kansas City in 1955.
Relocation did not bring success back to the franchise and the team moved once again in 1968, this time to Oakland. The Oakland A’s were owned by Charlie Finley, an individual that helped introduce a unique style and interesting ideas to the game that included the thought process of using orange baseballs. Finley brought in a number of star players including Reggie Jackson, Vida Blue and Rollie Fingers that helped bring the Oakland A’s back to it former winning ways.
The Oakland Athletics won three straight World Series titles from 1972-1974. Unfortunately the team was broken apart little by little as star players signed with other teams around the league, effectively ending this version of an Athletics dynasty. A decade and a half later the Oakland A’s returned to prominence once again, winning three consecutive American League pennants and a World Series title in 1989.
The Athletics have captured a total of nine World Series titles, fifteen American League pennants and fourteen AL West division titles. The 2002 squad won the American League West after breaking an AL record during the regular season by winning twenty games in a row. That season was documented in the 2011 movie Moneyball.
