The Pittsburgh Pirates were a very successful franchise in the first half of the twentieth century. The team captured National League pennants in 1901-1903, 1909, 1925 and 1927. The 1909 and 1925 seasons were particularly special as the Pirates also won the World Series title during those seasons. The team was led by Hall of Fame ballplayers such as Honus Wagner and Fred Clark during that era. The Pittsburgh Pirates would not win another pennant and World Series until 1960, a truly magical year for the franchise. The team was expected to lose to the New York Yankees in the “Fall Classic” but won in dramatic fashion in Game Seven of the series. After falling behind early in the game 7–4 the Pirates came back and won on second baseman Bill Mazeroski’s walk-off home run in the ninth inning. That home run by Mazeroski remains the only time the World Series has been clinched on a walk-off home run in the ninth inning of a Game Seven. Through the 2011 season the Pittsburgh Pirates have successfully captured two more World Series championships in 1971 and 1979.
