Pittsburgh Pirates
Professional baseball has been played in Pittsburgh since 1876. In 1882 one team from the area joined the American Association with a team name of Allegheny. Five years later the team became the first team from the American Association to join the National League. The franchise changed its name to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys when they joined the NL. It was not until 1891 that the team adopted the Pittsburg Pirates name but without the “H” at the end of Pittsburgh. The H was finally added in 1912.
The franchise enjoyed plenty of early success due to the fact the team was able to secure most of the top players from the Louisville Colonels, a former National League team that folded in 1899. Two of the players from that team, player/manager Fred Clarke and arguably the greatest shortstop to ever play the game, Honus Wagner helped lead the Pittsburg Pirates to National League pennants in 1901-1903 and again in 1909. The team also won the World Series in 1909. Once the team officially became the Pittsburgh Pirates post-season success eluded them until 1925, winning another NL pennant that year and in 1927, as well as capturing another World Series championship in 1925.
Through the 2011 season the Pittsburgh Pirates have won a total of five World Series titles, the last being in 1979 when Willie Stargell led the “We Are Family” Pirates to the championship. The franchise has also won nine National League pennants and nine NL East division championships. The Pittsburgh Pirates won three straight NL East titles from 1990-1992 but never advanced to the World Series, losing two of those years to the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS.
