Texas Rangers
The original Washington Senators moved to Minnesota in 1960. This move was partly the result of the fact Minnesota had been awarded a franchise that year and original Senators owner wanted to move his team to Minnesota and allow Washington, D.C. to have the expansion franchise. The move was approved and in 1961 a new Washington Senators franchise was born. This team played in the D.C. area until deciding to leave for Arlington, Texas in 1971. The next year was the first season of Texas Rangers baseball.
The second version of the Washington Senators was terrible so the Texas Rangers needed to dramatically improve in order to win over the fans. It did not take long for this to occur as Rangers ownership brought in some quality players to help build the franchise. The team lost over 100 games in the 1972 and 1973 seasons, but recorded a 84-76 record in 1974 to finish second in the American League behind eventual World Series champion the Oakland A’s and become the first team to finish above .500 after two straight 100-loss seasons.
A number of quality players have worn the Texas Rangers uniform over the years, including Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, Ivan Rodriguez, Juan Gonzalez, Ruben Sierra and Buddy Bell, but the Rangers were never able to quite get over the hump for years. Finally, 24 years after first moving to Texas the Rangers won their first American League West division title and advanced to the post-season. The team lost to the New York Yankees 1-3 in the American League Division Series that year but the franchise now had reason for optimism. The Texas Rangers took consecutive AL West titles in 1998 and 1999 but both teams were swept by the Yankees in the ALDS.
After that brief playoff run the Texas Rangers fell back into mediocrity for years. Finally with the addition of star players to the team such as 2010 AL MVP Josh Hamilton, Michael Young and Ian Kinsler, the Texas Rangers won two straight AL West division titles in 2010-2011 and captured its first two American League pennants both years. The Rangers fell short in both of its World Series appearances through 2011, including a crushing defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011 when the Cardinals were down to its very last strike in Game Six, only to come back and win that game in extra innings and then take home the title in Game Seven.
There is plenty of reason for optimism and Texas Rangers fans are very supportive of their team.
