1977 was the first year for the Toronto Blue Jays as a member of Major League Baseball. Expansion of the league enabled the MLB to travel to Canada, and the city of Toronto and province of Ontario were happy to field a new franchise.

Success would not come immediately to the Toronto Blue Jays. A common theme for new franchises is spending several years in the cellar of the division, and the Blue Jays unfortunately found themselves in this position often. However, the franchise was steadfast in its commitment to someday produce a winning team. The team’s first winning season would come in 1983.

The Toronto Blue Jays had acquired several young players that would be key in the later, successful years of the franchise, players such as pitchers Dave Stieb and Tom Henke and fielders such as Lloyd Moseby and George Bell. Two years after posting its first winning record the Blue Jays won the American League East. Although the team did not advance in the playoffs that year, the experience made the players and franchise hungry for more.

Four years after winning their first AL East title the franchise won its second. However, it was two years later when the Toronto Blue Jays firmly established itself as a power in the American League. Star players such as future Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar, John Olerud, Devon White and Duane Ward helped lead the Toronto Blue Jays to three straight AL East division titles from 1991-1993 and two World Series titles in 1992 and 1993. The victories in the “Fall Classic” solidified the status of the Toronto Blue Jays as the only team to win a World Series outside of the United States and the fastest American League expansion team to win the title, doing so in their 16th season.

The Toronto Blue Jays have not returned to the playoffs since their second World Series win but that has not caused a decrease in fan support.
