The Washington Nationals joined Major League Baseball in 1969 as part of MLB expansion that year along with the San Diego Padres. The franchise was originally in Montreal as the Expos and was the first MLB team in Canada. The franchise played from 1969-2004 as the Montreal Expos, advancing to the post-season just once while in Montreal in 1981 after winning its first and through the 2011 season only National League East division crown.

When Major League Baseball purchased the Expos in 2002 the franchise was moved to Washington, D.C. three years later. This was the third time that Major League Baseball came to D.C., the other two occasions as the Washington Senators. The first Washington Nationals game was played on April 4, 2005. First baseman and outfielder Brad Wilkerson was the last player to wear a Montreal Expos uniform and was honored with being the first Nationals player to come to the plate. He promptly responded with a base hit.

The Washington Nationals played their home games for the first three seasons at RFK Stadium, the same venue used by the Washington Redskins. This gave the organization time to build a new ballpark for the team, which was part of the deal that was in place to bring baseball back to the D.C. area. There was plenty of controversy surrounding the financing of the stadium, but Nationals Park finally opened in 2008. An incredible facility with various areas of the stadium named after former United States presidents, Nationals Park helped create a new legion of baseball fans in Washington, D.C.
