Washington Nationals
Washington, D.C. had hosted a Major League Baseball team on two different occasions in the past before the Washington Nationals came into being. The Washington Senators were a part of MLB from 1901-1960 and 1961-1971. The first Senators franchise moved to Minnesota and became the Twins, the second Senators team moved to Texas and became the Rangers. Once the second Senators team moved away, baseball was absent from the D.C. area for 33 years.
The opportunity for professional baseball to return to Washington D.C. arose when the Montreal Expos were sold to Major League Baseball by the owner of the Expos Jeffrey Loria. Originally the MLB considered contraction of the league from 30 teams to 28 and eliminating the Expos as part of that process, but when that did not occur Major League Baseball began looking for a new city to move the Expos to since the city of Montreal was no longer supporting the franchise. The league announced in September 2004 that the team would move to Washington, D.C. the next year.
The Washington Nationals spent their first three seasons in Washington, D.C. playing their home ballgames at RFK Stadium, the same venue where the NFL’s Washington Redskins play its games. In 2008 the franchise moved into Nationals Park, an incredible facility for baseball. The new ownership and new stadium have revived the baseball spirit in the nation’s capital with new hopes for success.
Through the 2011 season the franchise has only qualified for the post-season on one occasion, the strike-shortened season of 1981. During the playoffs the Montreal Expos defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round 3-2 but lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series 2-3. The Nationals are currently one of just two franchises in Major League Baseball to have never played in the World Series.
